Greg Stone: Saving the ocean one island at a time

Summary:
In this video, Greg Stone tells the story of how he helped the Republic of Kiribati. He described a story by letting us know we are far behind on marine protected land. There isaneffect on global awareness. The ocean is opaque, and we can’t see what’s going on. And therefore we're way behind on protection. But scuba diving, submersiblesand all the work that we're setting about to do here will help rectify that. Phoenix Islands are the world's largest marine protected area in the mid-Pacific.The average depths are about 12,000 ft..There is an ecosystem called parrotfish spawning. About 5,000 long nose parrotfish are spawning at the entrance to one of the Phoenix Islands. And they also explored the surface of the Islands which is important bird nesting site in the world. Kiribati is located in the Central Pacific in three island groups. They basically are one nation that controls most of the equatorial waters of the Central Pacific ocean. The Islands rise only one to two meters above the surface. Some of the islands have already gone under water. And these nations are faced with a real problem. And what we need to do now is to protect the ocean and have self-sustaining over time.

Response:
The ocean resource is rich.As the increasing of the world population, there is a great contradiction between the huge population and the supply of resources.Development and utilization of the rich resources of the ocean is the inevitable trend of historical development. Ocean is one of the main factors why the climate on the planet changes and it is also a cornucopia of marine mineral resources. As we all know, the seven tenths of the Earth are oceans, so the marine conservation and protection is an important part of environmental protection. It is important to protect the valuable marine life such as endangered whales, turtles and manatees. Marine pollution is caused by many factors. Therefore focus only on individual governance is not really solving the problem of marine pollution. The main objective of the current marine conservation is to protect marine resources for sustainable human use.First, we should to stop the excessive use of the marine biological resources, and second we should to protect marine habitats. So we can have a more beautiful ocean than before.

  1. I agree with you, Iris. I think that we should protect marine life and their environments. From my opinion, we could start from stop throwing garbage in to the sea, also garbage on beaches. According to my experience, I always see bottles, plastic bags, and others garbage lay on beaches, and then the water come and bring those things down to the sea. In addition, we can also stop buying gifts or decorations that made from marine material, such as sea shall or coral leaf, which damage marine environments. If we stop buying it, the seller will stop harmed marine resources. Even though, there are many things that we do and damage sea environments, these two solutions will be the easiest action to safe the ocean.

  2. I think everyone knows that we should protect our ocean or environment, but does everyone really do that right now? In fact, population is rising. However, we don’t have enough food or space in future. Protecting our environment is really important right now. For the recent example, Japanese have to face the difficulties after earthquake. I think this is the last warming from the environment to humans. If we don’t take any action seriously, we will have more dangerous situations in future. For me, I think Canada is a good place because it has really clean water and air. Even though Canadians have a correct knowledge for protecting environment, they didn’t do it well. Not only Canadians have to take it seriously, all human-beings have to do something for the earth too. I just want to say please protect our earth for our next generations. (words: 145)

  3. Protecting the ocean is absolutely essential!!! Our earth is largely accounted by water so if the ocean gets worse, our life also get worse. However, if we want to succeed in protecting the ocean, we will need to put a lot of effort. Why? Because along with humans' development, the needs of people have been raising rapidly so we've been over-exploiting the ocean. Therefore, the most emergency thing that we should do is making people aware of the consequences of damaging the oceans. In addition, I'm also amazed by the work of Greg Stone. He helped the Kiribati country set up a protected area of ocean from over-catching fish so that the marine life of the island nation also.

  4. I agree with Iris’s view about the protection of our oceans. As we all know that about 70% part of the earth is covered by oceans and water of the oceans is unusable because of salt, but oceans also have marine life like plants, fishes, and other creatures that live under the marine water. Human beings spread pollution everywhere and they also pollute oceans. The activities of human beings disturb the marine life such as garbage in the form of plastic bags, plastic glass, canes, and so on and sometimes oil leakage from the ships creates problem for the marine life. If we do not protect the marine life, it affects our ecosystem. In my home country, people worship the water as a god, even after doing this, they continuously pollute the water of the river or an ocean by using plastic bags, bottles, and material, which we use in worship and it mix with the sea water and pollute the ocean/sea. Moreover, it is necessary that we should stop polluting the oceans because they maintain our ecosystem and it is a responsibility of every human being to save our environment for our next generations.(Word count: 195)

  5. I agree with you, Iris. Ocean is the biggest part for the whole world, and comparing to oceans we are so small. However, we have been polluting to oceans for long time. When we want to eat, we catch fish from oceans. When we need more recourse, we take from it. When we have much garbage, we throw it into oceans. Everything is when we need oceans. We always want get something from it, but we do not think about what we should do for oceans. I think this is part of our human nature. I think if we do not protect our environment and getting profit when we need, the earth will revenge us one day. I also agree with what Irene said. Like the earthquake happened in Japan. I think that is not only because Japan is an island but also because this is the warning from the earth. People should alert, it is time for us to pay more energy to protect our environment.
